In the fourth exhibition in The Architect’s Studio series, the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo aims to shed light on a scarce resource in our life: time.

Anupama Kundoo
Kundoo sees time as a forgotten resource in architecture, while architecture is a process that embraces the present, the past and the future.
Constructed as a journey through time, the exhibition explores and integrates traditional Indian building customs, crafts and materials into Kundoo’s current works. In general, Kundoo is concerned with using as few resources as possible in her architecture.

The exhibition is created with two main themes. Under the first main theme of the exhibition, THE ARCHITECTURE OF TIME, the visitor has access to Anupama Kundoo’s research archives, which include the first sources of inspiration, processed materials and architectural works. It is an evolutionary journey from the first natural building materials – stone types and clay polished by the forces of nature – through mussel shells and butterflies to simple tools and handmade bricks. Here you will be able to experience an 1:1 construction of architect’s own house in the experimental township of Auroville, Southern India, which is among her most important works. Auroville arose from the idea of a community where people from different cultures could live in peace and harmony, regardless of nationality, religion, caste or politics.
The second main theme of the exhibition, CO-CREATION, presents Kundoo’s latest and so far biggest project – the town and housing development project Line of Goodwill for the city of Auroville. The project has arisen in collaboration with climate engineers from German firms among others, and with students from three schools of architecture – in Copenhagen, New Haven and Potsdam. In the exhibition you will see a model (1:50) of the 240,000 m2 project, and part of the facade is built up in 1:1 as an example of Kundoo’s work with the development of intelligent facades.
Taking time to rethink
Born in Pune, India in 1967, Anupama Kundoo graduated as an architect from JJ College of Architecture, the University of Mumbai in 1989.
Kundoo's buildings are primarily built in India, and in addition, she has worked and researched in a number of different contexts around the world. In this video, she talks about the most important human resource today: Time.
THE ARCHITECT’S STUDIO
The exhibition series The Architect’s Studio turns the focus on a new generation of pace-setting architects who work with sustainable and socially aware architecture and face the challenges of globalization. The first exhibition in the series, in 2017, was about the Chinese firm Amateur Architecture Studio directed by Wang Shu and his wife and partner Lu Wenyu, the second, in 2018, about the Chilean group ELEMENTAL headed by artistic director Alejandro Aravena. In 2019 the Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao and her Estudio was exhibited in the series.
