The Politics and Poetics of Exhibiting
– A Conference on Rethinking the Art Museum as Public Institution in the 21st Century

The Western art-historical canon – and the institutions that manage this tradition – are currently being challenged and renegotiated in the light of new perspectives, voices and societal conditions, and ideas about the art museum’s role and relevance as a public institution in the 21st century are rapidly changing.

What role can exhibitions play in rethinking, questioning and revising the ‘blind spots’ of museum institutions and their own collections through practice? Can exhibitions and exhibition-making function as areas where the institution’s own socio-political, aesthetic and economic paradigms are challenged and even reformu-lated? If so, what are the possibilities and limitations of such a practice, and how does it play out differently among institutional actors?

The conference seeks to explore the role and relevance of exhibitions as concrete, spatial arguments that lend themselves to deliberations on new ideas about how the art museum could work as a public institution today.
